Make an Embellished Straw Tote
An embellished straw tote bag makes a summer accessory that's useful & cute!
I'm headed to the Lake soon and wanted a cute bag to take some small items on the boat. I found the perfect size bag to hold my phone, a bathing suit and a water bottle. The straw bag I found was from Michaels and priced at 50% off so I thought by dressing it up a little, it would look much more expensive and cuter than it originally was!
I liked that this bag was lined with a thin canvas fabric which makes it much better for carrying fabrics that could snag on the straw. Here I'll teach you how to easily and inexpensively create an eye-catching bag.
- Basic straw bag in your chosen shape and size
- Glue gun and glue sticks (mine is a glue gun from ad-tech; I love the high and low settings on it)
- Fringe, tassels, beads or other embellishments you like
- Silk or other artificial flowers
- Craft scissors
- Wire cutters (if you'll be cutting large stemmed silk flowers)
Measure the circumference of the top of your bag. Cut your chosen trim to size, adding 1/2" to your circumference measurement. Heat up your glue gun on high setting. Make sure you have a back-up glue stick handy in case you need it!
Being careful not to burn your hands, begin to glue the trim onto the bag. You'll want to do this step first so you can embellish on top of trim. When you get to the end of the trim, slightly turn under 1/2" so the trim doesn't fray. Glue down securely.

Experiment and get creative with placement of items you'll be attaching. When you've decided on placement, begin glueing items down. Press items down firmly and make sure to let each embellishment dry before turning the bag.
Now you have the perfect embellished straw tote bag for summer, completely customized using your own creativity! It's the perfect bag for practical use but also to display in your home since it will be so darn cute! Do you have any projects like this you'd like to share?
