Rustic farmhouse table with burlap table runner and decorative plant and pumkins

I’m in love with Farmhouse style and have been in need of a new table runner that wasn’t so formal. My table, from Restoration Hardware, is one of my favorite finds. It’s so rustic but coordinates with all of my other non-rustic furniture and antiques. When I want to have a more formal meal I simply throw a lace tablecloth on it and instantly dress it up.

While at the thrift store recently, I found a brand new piece of burlap and since I wanted something easy to make and inexpensive, I came up with the idea of fringing the sides of the burlap to create the perfect farmhouse-inspired table runner that I could customize to be the perfect size for my table!

You’ll find a quick Video tutorial below showing you exactly how I made this runner. Plus, I’ll even show you what you can do with your left over burlap edges!

Let’s Go!

Materials for No-Sew Burlap Table Runner:

  • Burlap (enough to make a runner in your desired length & width)

  • Scissors

  • Tape Measure

Instructions & Video for farmhouse style no-sew fringed burlap table runner:

Step 1

Measure your table and decide what size you’d like for your runner to be. Take note that the fringe will take up 1” on each side of your runner.

Step 2

Measure and cut your burlap to the full size that you want your runner to be (including the fringe).

Step 3

Now all you do is start to pull threads out on each side of the burlap piece. I like 1” of fringe but feel free to increase or decrease this amount as desired.

Now since I have a hard time throwing useful things away, I came up with this idea for “upcycling” the threads I’d pulled from the burlap fabric, and the edge I’d cut off. Using some of my favorite quilt-patterned wrapping paper and the burlap remnants, I had a pretty darn cute gift, all wrapped and ready for gifting!

Hope you’ll try this fun table runner, and please share with me what you create with this easy fringing technique!
