Cable Twist Knitted Socks

A simple pattern featuring variegated yarn.

Cable Twist hand knitted socks pattern by Fair Isle

I've been wanting to knit some socks for a long time, but when I saw these cute Cabled Twist socks using the Barclay yarn from Fair Isle, I decided it was time to stop procrastinating! These socks are darn cute and the pattern features twisted and horseshoe cables. I would consider this an easy project for an experienced knitter but since I've spent little time knitting anything other than a quick scarf or shawl for a while I needed to brush up on my skills.

The yarn is part of what makes these socks so great! I saw this yarn at the Fair Isle booth at Creativation and knew I wanted to use it for a project. The Barclay yarn is a lightweight washable yarn which is made from superwash Merino wool, acrylic and bamboo. Since I'm really sensitive to scratchy "wooly" clothing, I was happy to find a yarn with the durability of wool, yet super soft. The other fun thing about this yarn is the variegated color selection (preview-the available Barclay yarn colors here).

Hope you'll enjoy making and wearing these adorable socks!

Notes

For the provisional cast on, we recommend the crocheted version. We recommend reading the stitches and abbreviations for details on stitches. The socks are worked from the toe up, working back and forth short rows to create the toe and the heel. The toe and the heel is worked the same for both socks. The only difference is when you arrive to the heel turn, you stop working the 28 instep stitches. The first round from the written instructions is not charted but will need to be worked as it includes an increase. The sixth round repeat is charted for easy reading.

Toe Shaping

On 2 DPNs, using Provisional CO, CO 27 sts.

Row 1: K26, move the working yarn as if to purl and slip the last stitch from the left needle to the right needle. Turn your work.

Row 2: Slip 1, P24, Move the working yarn as if to knit and slip last stitch. Turn.

Row 3: Slip 1, knit across to the last stitch before the unworked stitch. Wrap and turn.

Row 4: Slip 1, purl across to the stitch before the unworked stitch. Wrap and turn.

*repeat Rows 3 & 4 four more times with a total of 6 wrapped stitches on either side of the working, center stitches.

Next Row: Knit across the live stitches across to the first unworked, wrapped stitch. On the next stitch, pick up the wrap and knit it together with the wrapped stitch. Put your needle through the horizontal wrap, then the vertical stitch, and then knit the two together. Wrap the next stitch [so that it now has two wraps] and turn.

Next Row: Slip 1 [double-wrapped] stitch and purl across to the first unworked, wrapped stitch. Pick up the wrap and purl it together with the wrapped stitch. Wrap the next stitch and turn.

Continue until you have worked all the stitches and you once again have 27 working sts.

Divide the 27 stitches over 2 DPNs.

Undo and pick up stitches from Provisional cast on and evenly place on 2 DPNs. You will now have 27 sts for the instep and 27 sts for the sole with a total number of 54 sts.
