A Passion for Remodeling
Home remodels have been a passion...an obsession really...for my entire adult life. Having remodeled over thirty homes and rentals, I've found it rewarding in so many ways. Don't get me wrong...there have been times of dealing with very stressful deals or working for sixteen hours straight with a screwdriver or paintbrush in my hand. Two days before I had my first baby I was on the floor laying (vinyl) tile; my boys were involved from the day they were born and still are!
After years of remodels and my magazine work in Birmingham, Alabama, I moved to the beautiful state of Colorado in 1995. This would be where many houses were bought and sold and where remodeling became a way of life. In less than five years, we lived in nine houses, had two children, and moved to Seattle and back. Equity was continuing to build and trips to Home Depot with a toddler and a baby were frequent.
As the business grew there were flips on the side and many rentals that we purchased, rented and eventually sold. My kids were troopers through all of this and it was just a way of life. It afforded us the opportunity to eventually live in some pretty amazing homes and to travel with the kids to great places. It was also helpful to have nice spacious homes for the photo shoots I was doing for several McCall's Quilting magazines. My house often became a photo studio which was also a way of life for my boys!
To this day at 20 and 21 years of age, they're still helping with my houses when they can. Hopefully, they've learned a thing or two that will be useful in their futures.
I'll be writing more articles with before and after photos that I know you'll enjoy seeing. Stay tuned! I'll be providing lots of tips, tricks and ideas for DIY projects for home and garden. I'd also love for you to share your stories. If you've ever remodeled a home I'm sure you have an interesting experience of some sort! Please tell me about it!
